Home Health's Role in Cancer Care

Mid-State Home Health understands that cancer affects your physical and emotional health. Likely you, or someone you know, will be touched by cancer. If you are in this situation, you need to know that you are not alone. Feeling secure and comfortable while at home is Mid-State's goal while providing you with the most appropriate service.

Mid-State Home Health is dedicated to providing the best care possible for all patients. We believe that the proper education for the patient and their family member is an important part of the process.

Part of this education means knowing what services are available to you. Our staff of nurses will administer medications, assess symptoms and implanted port care, draw blood, monitor vital signs, administer dressing changes, monitor intravenous (IV) lines, and assist with pain management, as well as other services requested by the doctor.

Mid-State Home Health would like to provide you with a few tips when visiting your doctor:

  • Always try to bring someone with you
  • Prior to doctor's visits, write down the questions you want to ask your doctor (Also write down the answers you receive)
  • Seek additional information at any stage of your illness.

Remember to contact the American Cancer Society (ACS), who offers a variety of services for cancer patients and their families. The ACS can be reached by calling 1-800-ACS-2345. Assistance to help pay for home care is covered by Medicare.

Stacey Smith, RN, is Director of Nursing at Mid-State Home Health in Alexandria.
