What is This Swelling in My Arm?

If you are one of the 2 million breast cancer survivors in the United States you could have lymphedema. Lymphedema can occur in the arm or breast area following the treatment of breast cancer. It generally is a result of either mastectomy or lumpectomy with axillary dissection. It is also commonly seen in the lower extremities of patients who have had prostate or ovarian cancer, and even after hip or knee replacement, and heart catherizations.

The lymph system, which is made up of lymph nodes and vessels somewhat similar to blood vessels, is responsible for removing waste material (lymph) from cells throughout the body. When lymph nodes are removed or disrupted during surgery or radiation treatment, the lymph system may not work as efficiently resulting in a build up of fluid. Over time this build-up of fluid can lead to skin and tissue changes, and even infection. Lymphedema can become a long term condition and if left untreated can be debilitating.

Fortunately, there is a treatment available for those suffering from lymphedema. Christus Cabrini Cancer Center now provides consultation to cancer patients regarding lymphedema precautions and education to help facilitate recovery following cancer treatment. Angie Roberts, LOTR, is an occupational therapist with specialized training in the treatment of lymphedema. This program was designed to empower patients so they will learn basic guidelines to help lower their risk, and if necessary treat the condition if it develops. This is only program of its kind in central Louisiana. Dr. Lawrence Menache, Director of Radiation Oncology states that the CHRISTUS Cabrini Cancer Center is excited to offer this new and beneficial program to its cancer patients who may be at risk.

If you are a breast cancer survivor and would like more information regarding this program, or if you feel you may have lymphedema, please contact Angie Roberts at the CHRISTUS Cabrini Cancer Center at (318) 448-6917.You can also ask your doctor for a referral.
